Cassondra Hayes, a Senior at Carthage High School, has been awarded a National Silver Medal through the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.

Our district participates each year through the Central NY Scholastic Art Show held at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse, NY. This year the CNY region submitted 5,673 pieces of art, representing 2,500 student artists and over 100 area schools. Student work that receives a Gold Key at the regional level is submitted for national adjudication. Cassondra’s sculpture ‘Lemon Louie’ received a Gold Key through the CNY Regional Scholastic Art Show which then moved on to be judged nationally.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is the nation’s longest-running (more than 90 years) and most prestigious
recognition program for creative teens in grades 7-12.

In 2019, students submitted nearly 340,000 works of art and writing across the United States.

“Submissions are juried by luminaries in the visual and literary arts, some of whom are past award recipients.
Panelists look for works that best exemplify originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or
vision.” A silver medal at the national level is given to works that demonstrate high honors.

Miss Newtown has had the privilege of having Cass throughout her HS Ceramics program. She has completed the Jefferson
Community College EDGE ART 131 and ART 232 Ceramics classes, and this year is working as an Independent Art
student. Miss. Hayes was recently a Carthage HS Student of the Month, is enrolled in the New Visions Program, Vice President of the Art Club, participates in Cross Country, is a Second Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwondo and continues to excel academically. This year Cassondra also helps with the Modified Art Class, a HS art class designed for students with special needs. She loves working with Mr. St. Croix’s class and they love her.

She works hard at whatever she puts her hands and heart to.
