WHAT IS SCHOOL BASED OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY?
School based OT is a related service for students whose ability to succeed in school is significantly hindered by deficits in fine motor skills, visual perception, sensory motor, and handwriting. Some areas that occupational therapy may address are: 1) Improving function: Increasing muscle strength, improving coordination, reflex integration or assisting in the development of gross or fine motor skills so student can participate in school activities. 2) Adapting the environment: Making changes within the classroom environment to suit the needs of the student. Adaptations can also include providing the student with classroom tools that compensate for deficit areas. (Slant boards, different types of paper, adapted writing implements, adapted scissors, pencil grips, preferential seating, sensory programs, weighted vests, "wiggle seats" etc.) 3) Teaching new skills: Providing the students with strategies for better handwriting, organization of work and alternative ways to complete activities.
